Semester 2 of 2 – Research 3 focuses on both life and computer skills that are essential for high school students making the transition to life after high school. The course shows students the steps for choosing a career, conducting a job search, selecting the right college, applying to college, and getting financial aid. This course prepares young adults for a successful life after high school, from maintaining a healthy body and a safe home to finding and keeping a job. Additionally, students learn about digital citizenship and how to communicate effectively and appropriately on the Internet. They also learn about file types, including PDFs, as well as basic file management. Students explore the origins of open-source software, including the LibreOffice suite. Using this free application suite, students learn how to create, save, and format documents in Writer; how to design spreadsheets and manipulate and perform calculations on data in Calc; and how to build, save, and customize slide show presentations in Impress. At the end of this course, students have a knowledge of and appreciation for important life skills as well as the tools to work with and present information in a variety of forms for professional, academic, and personal use.
